North/West Passage Clarus Project
Clarus is an initiative to develop and demonstrate an integrated surface transportation weather observing, forecasting and data management system, and to establish a partnership to create a Nationwide Surface Transportation Weather Observing and Forecasting System. The objective of Clarus is to provide information to all transportation managers and users to alleviate the effects of adverse weather (e.g., fatalities, injuries and delays).
The North/West Passage encompasses the eight states along I-90/I-94 from Wisconsin to Washington. In these states, there are numerous systems for collecting, processing and integrating traveler and road maintenance information, and for delivering the information to users. The purpose of the multi-state Clarus demonstration across the North/West Passage states is to provide a clear example of how an open and integrated approach to observational data management can be used to overcome deficiencies and improve road weather information products.

- This Clarus Regional Demonstration Concept of Operations document is a high-level planning and visioning document intended for a wide variety of stakeholders. These stakeholders are interested in improving the use of road weather in their decision-making; for the weather service providers both engaged in surface transportation and those associated with public weather services; and, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), specifically the FHWA Road Weather Management Program. This ConOps provides a clear example of how an open and integrated approach to observational data management can be used to overcome road weather information deficiencies and improve road weather information products and services.
- Clarus NorthWest Passage ESS Metadata Draft Final Report - UND STWRC
- Research activities provide to the FHWA's Clarus System environmental sensor station (ESS) metadata in support of the North/West Passage Clarus Regional Demonstration Concept of Operations Development. Efforts focused on developing sensor and collector environmental metadata consisting of critical owner provided fields and ESS site and climate record environmental metadata as outlined by the Clarus System Design Data Dictionary.
